Valorification of thermal factor through winter crop followed by maize for silo, in the irrigated zones in the Danube Plain

During 1988-1990, on the cambic chernozem at Fundulea under irrigation, intensive systems made up of 2 crops of Italian ryegrass, wheat or winter barley, followed by maize for silo, as second crop were studied in comparison with maize for silo, cultivated on crop's own field. It was noticed that under these conditions maize for silo cultivated on crop's own field uses only 60-62 percent from thermal source of the respective zone. The optimum alternative is that of two harvests of Italian ryegrass followed by late (Fundulea 420) or semilate (Fundulea 320) maize hybrids for silo, which give yields equal to those obtained on crop's own field, an additional quantity of 60-65 t/ha green mass or 10-12 thousand nutritive units/ha being obtained. After winter barley, the semilate maize hybrids for silo (Fundulea 320) produce 85-87 percent from the yield obtained in crop's own field, a yield of 6-8 t/ha grains resulting. After winter wheat, semilate hybrids or semiearly maize hybrids for silo (F 270) produce up to 75 percent from the yield on crop's own field, a yield of 6-7 t grains/ha being obtained.
