Effect of inoculation of barley with diazotrophic bacteria and their survival depending on soil moisture and temperature

In pot experiments the antibiotic-resistant mutants of four diazotrophic bacteria were used to study their population dynamics in rhizoplane of barley grown under normal, subnormal or elevated conditions of soil moisture and temperature. The temperature of plant cultivation had no effect on survival rate of introduced bacteria. The soil moisture was a determinant factor (as compared with plant genotype and nitrogen status of plants) in the ability of bacteria to colonize the rhizoplane. A maximum number of all studied strains was observed at water shortage in soil (30% WHC). The benefical effect of inoculation of barley with the present strains was a maximum when the plants were grown under unfavourable environmental conditions. It is suggested that a higher tolerance of inoculated plants for stress conditions may be the important mechanism of interaction between diazotrophic bacteria and plants
