The importance of systematic determination of in vitro digestibility of the home produced defined samples of roughage is stressed since all present systems for energy estimation of feeds for cattle base on the content of digestible nutrients. Equations for the calculation of metabolic energy using digestible nutrients are given for following methods: net energy for cattle, Swedish estimation of metabolic energy, metabolic energy estimation used in Great Britain as well as American, Dutch and German methods for estimation of net energy for lactation. Energetic values of some feeds are given, expressed as starch equivalent, total digestible nutrients, Swedish and British metabolic energy and as American, French and Dutch net energy for lactation.
