The separation of milk of ill cows from milk of healthy ones during milking is an efficient measure preventing the secondary contamination of milk. 40 % of milk samples from milk tanks contained more somatic cells than is the standard limit. For example, in the group of 37 cows 19 % of samples contained the evidence of mastitis. The number of nonstandard milk samples decreased to a minimum by use of automatic milk classifier Somatic-5 and the losses in the quality and quantity of produced milk were decreased as well.
