Experiment on comparison of some cover crops for orchard was conducted at Muang district, Nongkhai province on Ponepisai soil series during the years 1983-1985. The cover crops tested were Centrosema pubescens, Pueraria phaseoloides, Calopogonium mucunoides, and Stylosanthes hamata. Calopogonium and kudzu were the most fast growing species as compared to the other two cover crops and verano was the slowest whereas the growth of centrosema was moderate. In terms of drought resistance centrosema was the most and second place went to kudzu while calopogonium seemed to be the least. Soil moisture content under all four cover crop species tended to be higher than that of the treatments without cover crop throughout the growing period. Centrosema and calopogonium were the best in terms of preserving soil moisture content. It is suggested that the mixtures of centrosema and calopogonium should be intercropped with fruit tree for erosion control and soil moisture preservation purposes.
