Effect of containers on storability of groundnut seed

Unshelled groundnut seeds with different levels of initial moisture content (6.01-7.00 % and 5.01-6.00 %) and containers (paper and sealed plastic bags) were separately stored under ambient and controlled conditions. The controlled condition was 15-20 deg. celsius and 50-60 % relative humidity. Every month during storage, seeds were sampled and tested for standard germination, vigor, and moisture content. After eight months of storage, no pronounced difference in germination of seeds either with high low initial moisture content was observed. Seeds kept in sealed plastic bags maintained both germination and vigor higher than those in paper bags. Germination and vigor of seeds stored under the controlled condition declined slower than those stored under ambient condition. The fastest reduction of germination was found on seeds with high initial moisture content, kept in paper bags, and stored under ambient condition. Seed with low initial moisture content, contained in sealed plastics bags, and stored under ambient showed no pronounced difference in germination from those with both high and low initial moisture content, kept in paper bags, and stored under the controlled condition. Ideally groundnut seeds should be stored under a controlled condition to maintain its quality, but the cost is too high. The cost can be reduced by storing seeds under an ambient condition provided they are dried to lower than 6 % moisture content and kept in sealed plastic bags.
