Applying the method of hybridization of divergent genotypes, so far 13 forage and 28 malting barley cultivars have been in the Institute of Field and Vegetable Crops in Novi Sad, Yugoslavia. Several cultivars of forage and malting barleys have been approved which have better characteristics than already existing cultivars. Six-rowed winter forage barley Galeb had average yield at five locations 1130 kg/ha higher than standard cultivar Partizan. Two rowed spring barley Lazar is less favourable for malting due to high protein content, and should be therefore used as forage barley. The cultivars Pek and Vihor have high values for Hartong number and can be applied in the process of exploitation of non-malted starch raw materials.
