[Investigation into the radioresistance of barley microflora used as the support of antibiotics producers]

Barley is used as the support for the inoculation of antibiotics in the pharmaceutical industry. Due to such a specific use, the barley has to be completely sterile for the breeding of appropriate molds i.e. production of appropriate antibiotics. The following microorganisms were found on the raw material, enterobacteria, micrococci, clostridia, aerobic sporogenous bacteria, molds and yeasts. Cold sterilization was chosen for the thorough decontamination of barley seed. The samples of barley were irradiated with gamma-rays, using 60Co as the source of ionizing irradiation. As the barley was contaminated with sporogenous and radioresistant microorganisms, somewhat higher doses of gamma irradiation were applied: 10, 15, 20 and 25 kGy.
