Iron deficiency or excess caused a considerable reduction of the mass of the above-ground part and root of the young sugarbeet plants. Iron deficiency caused a significant reduction of the contents of chlorophyll a and b and carotenoids in leaves. Iron excess did not exert a significant effect on these parameters. The activity of nitrate reductase, glutamine synthetase and glutamate dehydrogenase and the content of soluble proteins were the highest in the plants grown in the medium iron concentration (10** (-5) M Fe)
