Seven alfalfa varieties and five genotypes were tested. The average yield obtained in the five-year investigation period (1986/90) amounted to 11.2 t/ha, while in the normal exploitation period (1987/89) it amounted to 14.4 t/ha of alfalfa hay. In the first and the second cutting of the second normal exploitation year (1988) the crude protein content amounted to 20.0 and 22.3 and the crude fibre content to 24.3 and 23.4, respectively. Very high positive correlation is between dry matter and crude protein yields (r=+0.96) and a negative correlation between crude protein and crude fibre contents (r=-0.54). Yugoslav alfalfa varieties, among which NS Slavija, OS-66 and the NS-IV/8 genotype in particular, provided better results than the foreign ones.
