Effect of weed competition in chickpea [in Bangladesh]

In a field investigation at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Farm, Mymensingh, the effects of weed competition for different durations e.g. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 days after sowing (DAS) and weed competition till harvest along with a weed free check, were studied during the period from December 1984 to April 1985. The seed yield of chickpea was significantly reduced (58% yield loss) due to weed competition. Among the yield attributes only the number of seeds per plant was significantly affected by the weed competition. The period of weed competition from 20 to 30 DAS was found to be the most critical period of weed competition during which the yield decrease was the greatest. The predominant weed species in the crop were Chenopodium album L. and Dactyloctenium aegyptium (L.) Beauv. which constituted more than 73% of total weed.
