Formulation of printing pastes using carboxymethyl cellulose and microcrystalline cellulose as thickener [in Bangladesh]

The possibility of the use of microcrystalline cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose (obtained from jute fibre and jute wastes) as the substitutes of traditional thickener in textile printing has been investigated. Screen-paintings on both jute and cotton fabrics were carried out with several receipes of pastes prepared with alginate, micro-crystalline cellulose and carboxymethyl cellulose either in combination or alone at different proportions varying the use of printing auxiliaries. The print quality was assessed by measuring the sharpness of the prints and their washfastness. Carboxymethyl cellulose appeared to be suitable as thickener either alone or in combination with alginate. Microcrystaline cellulose was unsuitable.
