Domestic production of food items in Bangladesh is far less that the requirement. Losses in foods further aggravates the nutritional status. In areas of south East Asia, some crops suffer loss up to 50% and factors involved in consequent loss due to micro organism, pests and exposure of products to extremes of temperature and moisture. Agro-processing including improvement in storage and preservation facilities at local levels, can help reduce losses due to above mentioned factors. Based on the agriculture commodities grown in Bangladesh, agro-processing technologies with potential for generating employment and income in the rural areas are identified as (1) cereal technology, (2) jute technology, (3) oil seed technology, (4) fruits and vegetable technology, (5) fish technology, and (6) livestock product processing technology. The processing industries can generate employment and income opportunity at local level and provide value added agricultural products.
