"Growth" damage in Chrysanthemum caused by Frankliniella occidentalis (Pergande); a (cryo) scanning electron microscopic study

The development of 'growth' damage was studied in detail with a normal scanning electron microscope (SEM) and cryo-SEM. Clear differences were found between SEM and cryo-SEM specimens. In the cryo-SEM the form of the cells was kept intact because freshly frozen leaves could be used. With the cryo-SEM differences between healthy cells with cell content and empty cells could be clearly seen. For SEM the leaves had to be critical point dried. In the dried leaves no differences between empty and healthy cells could be seen. Pictures were made of thrips infested and of healthy chrysanthemum leaves. In chrysanthemum Frankliniella occidentalis mostly feed on the epidermal and palissade parenchyma cells. We suggest that 'growth' damage arose from destruction of these cells in young undeveloped leaves.
