Present status of the European mink in Spain and research guidelines

The European mink has been found in the whole Pais Vasco and in half of Navarra (Cantabric mountains) for at least half a century. It also occurs in other parts of the Ebro basin (Rioja, Catalunya) (Spain). The study of its present distribution is still in progress and seems to indicate a range extension. Rivers and coastal marshes habitats are preferred and minks are not found above 600 m. The main threats for the species are discussed: loss of habitat, competition with the American mink, environmental pollution and persecution. Out of 43 animals found dead, 24 were trapped or killed, 10 were road casualties and seven had been shot. Four individuals were monitored by radiotracking, showing home range areas comprised between 3.1 km (young male) and 8 km (adult males) of river banks. Some data about the helminth parasites and the pesticides burden have also been collected
