[Pig slurry and sewage sludge: effect on the soil N content]

Over many years very high levels of pig slurry and treated sewage sludge were applied on a sandy clay soil in Liebefeld-Bern (565 m a.s.l.) in order to examine the effect on the total and nitrate nitrogen contents of the soil. High application rates of pig slurry (5 t organic matter per hectare per year) caused a low increase of the total soil nitrogen content, whereas the nitrate nitrogen content increased dramatically. The risk of nitrate leaching and denitrification was considerable. Very high applications of treated sewage sludge (5 t of organic matter per hectare per year) lead to a high increase of total soil nitrogen, the nitrate nitrogen content, however, was low
