With a 200 ha area, faba bean is a marginal crop in Switzerland. Under normal conditions its mean yield amounts to 50 q/ha with a protein content slightly under 30 % of the dry matter. Among 19 new varieties of spring faba bean tested in variety trials between 1992 and 1994, seven varieties drew our attention. On a three-year average in four locations six varieties obtained a similar yield ranging between 48.2 and 51.6 q/ha. Among them Aribo and Lofabo had grain and protein yields slightly above Herz-Freya, the standard variety. In spite of a rather weak yield, Caspar, a short and low-tannin variety, might be interesting for the production of a specific quality. The shortest varietes had generally a better lodging resistance
