[Pythium ultimum Throw. causes poor seedling emergence in winter wheat]

Poor emergence (40 %) of the winter wheat cv. Bernina sown with seeds produced in 1989 was observed in a field in March 1994. Surviving seedlings were stunted and showed root necroses. Seed germination was normal in blotting-paper tests. Poor emergence was also observed in a seedbed soil. Pythium ultimum was isolated from soil and from diseased seedlings. In an inoculated soil mix P. ultimum caused a damping-off of the old Bernina seeds, younger Bernina seeds (a few months to three years old), and other wheat cv. and tomato and sugarbeet. Damping-off of the younger wheat seeds was 20 to 70 % of that observed in the old Bernina seeds. No relations were found between cultivar or age of the younger wheat seeds and the level of damping-off. P. ultimum and very likely other Pythium spp. are potential agents of damping-off and seedling diseases of wheat when seeds aged 5 years or more or poor quality seeds are used
