The present status and potential of oyster industry in Ghana

A survey was conducted along the coast of Ghana between November, 1993 and April, 1994 to assess the status and potential of oyster industry in the country. One hundred and eight (108) coastal water bodies consisting of 10 estuaries and 98 lagoons were 'screened' for their suitability or otherwise, for oyster farming using a point system based on relevant ecological parameters. Forty-one percent of the water bodies had thriving oyster (Crassostrea tulipa) populations, while eight percent showed evidence of exterminated populations. Forty-eight percent of the water bodies were found to be suitable for commercial cultivation of oysters. The species was popular as a source of protein among coastal communities in 3 of the 4 coastal regions of Ghana. Oyster shells were found to be used for a variety of purposes including, paint preparation, poultry feed ingredient, concrete for building and medical application
