The chemical contact lethal test was used to assess the efficacy of five chemicals at different concentrations in controlling in vitro growth of Phytophthora palmivora and Phytophthora megakarya. Three of the compounds, ethanoic acid, propionic acid and sodium salicylate were effective in controlling the growth of the pathogens. Sodium benzoate could control P. palmivora but not P. megakarya. However, the fifth compound sodium ethanoate had no effect on any of the pathogens. The effect of ethanoic acid and propionic acid on P. megakarya was the same, however, ethanoic acid was about 25 % more potent on P. palmivora than propionic acid. The salts, sodium benzoate and sodium salicylate were about 50 % less potent than ethanoic acid on P. palmivora. It is suggested that ethanoic acid could be used as an effective fungicide base in controlling black pod disease of cocoa
