The effect of different water and N supplies on the nitrate content of table beet on sandy soils (Preliminary report)

Sandy soils require special care in their supplying with water and nutrients in order to produce quality crops free of harmful substances (nitrate). In the same time rentability and the protection of environment and soil, respectively, must also be considered. Loose soils due to their low water retaining capacity require frequent irrigation which, in turn, reduces the nutrient content by leaching and necessitates side-dressings. Trials indicated that on sandy soils the higher N dosage resulted in considerable nitrate accumulation under optimal and poor (natural) water supply as well. Both water supply extremes may affect the nitrate accumulation positively in vascular tissues. This must be taken into consideration when choosing proper side-dressing doses and production technologies. Further trials are needed to confirm our assumptions
