The influences of limited daily grazing on the performance of dairy cows. 1st Paper: The influences on milk performance and on the somatic cell number

The impact of limited daily grazing on milk performance was examined in 3 and 4 year experiments on two large scale farms. The control stock were fed by zero-grazing whereas those involved in the experiment were grazed between the morning and evening milkings. The pastures were established overseeded grass lands with fertilization. The experimental groups received other forage and roughage supplementation in the shed over the periods with poorgrass allowance. As both groups received the same amounts of feed, the differences in their milk production can definitely be attributed to the way of feeding. The authors found that the yield and composition (fat and protein content) of milk production was not affected by the two feeding systems. The differences were basically caused by the different characteristics of the farms and the years. The results, however, show that fibre and fodder supplementation during the critical months is imperative. The somatic cell number in the milk for the grazing stock was significantly reduced over the summer, and this positive effect survived during the winter months
