Effects of sodium chloride of the absorption and translocation of several ions in plants, 4: Effects of the concentrations of NaCl on the absorption and translocation of K, Ca and Mg ions in rice (Oryza sativa L.) and soy bean (Glycine max Marr.)

The responses of the absorption and the translocation of K, Ca and Mg ions has been compared in two kinds of crops, rice and soy bean, which were cultivated in nutrient solution containing 7 concentration of NaCl (0-150 mmol L(-1) NaCl). The results obtained are as follows: 1) Absorption: In soybeans K+ absorbed (meq/plant) and K+ absorbing rate (meq/100g) increased with increasing Nacl content in medium up to 75 mmol(-1) NaCl, and the absorbing rates of Ca2+ increased with increasing NaCl content in the medium. In rice plants K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+ were absorbed and their absorbing rates decreased with increasing Nacl content in the medium. These results suggested that the main passage of Na+ or Cl- across the plasma membrane of root to xylem differed from each other (example: apoplastic transport in the rice roots and ion channel transport in the soybean roots). 2) Translocation: Both crops showed almost the same response over the concentrations of NaCl used on transporting of K+, Ca2+ and Mg2+. Upper transports of K+ in the root and the stem of both plants and Mg2+ in the stem of soybean and Ca2+ in the root of rice were promoted with increasing NaCl concentrations in medium. 3) The balances of cation to anion in every part were maintained completely in all treatments in both crops
