Sulphur availability in Kenya soils

Esilaba, A.O. | Ssali, H.
The availability of sulphur(s) to plants in some Kenyan soils was determined using the Janssen double-pot technique. The yield and S uptake results indicated that there was a response to additional S and that the magnitude of response depended on the initial soil S content. The sufficient quotient, percentage dry matter yield, calculated sulphate S uptake and the apparent S uptake appear to be good estimates of S available to plants. These yields and uptake parameters showed good correlation with sulphate - S. The results of the greenhouse study using sorghum confirm that some soils in Kenya are S-deficient. However, further investigations on response surfaces using other crops should be conducted
