Spatiotemporal distribution of planktonic larval fish in Onagawa bay [Japan]

Larval fish fauna of Onagawa Bay, Miyagi Prefecture, was studied by monthly samplings using ring-nets from April 1989 to February 1990. A total of 10,606 individuals of 11 orders, 53 families, 72 species were collected from Onagawa Bay. Individuals were most abundantly in August with Engraulis japonica consisting of 82.1% of total number of collected individuals. Gobioidei had the largest number of species (20) followed of Scorpaeniformes (18 species). Species of fish larvae collected in Onagawa Bay were divided into 3 seasonal and distributional types using cluster analysis. Each types are as follows: Seasonal occurrence types: Spring type occurs in low water temperature and low salinity as an effect of the Oyashio current from April to June. Summer type occurs in high water temperature and high salinity as an effect of warm current from July to October. Fall-Winter type occurs in comparatively high salinity and water temperature declining term from November to February. Distributional types: A type is collected from the mouth to the outside of the Bay where the effect of offshore water is strong. B type is collected over the whole area of the Bay. C type is restricted to the inner part of the Bay
