Effect of cannibalism on the laboratory cultured population of the brackish-water copepod Sinocalanus tenellus

Cannibalistic effect on the population dynamics of the brackish-water copepod sinocalanus tenellus was examined in the laboratory. The stage development was rather synchronous, resulting in apparent three generations during 68-day cultivation period. Since the population growth rate was inversely related to female abundance, the population dynamics seemed to be controlled density-dependently. The mortalities in NI-III due to cannibalism fell within the range from 70.3 to 99.7%, with a mean of 96.3%. S. tenellus nauplii were exposed to high cannibalistic pressure throughout the cultivation period, so that cannibalism was regarded as a prime factor to determine the population size of this species
