Combustion characteristics of low cetane fuel on high speed diesel engine

The effects of diesel fuel properties especially cetane number on engine performance have been studied at constant RPM using a single cylinder, direct injection, 4-cycle diesel engine, The start-up operation was tested by changing the cetane numbers from 60 to 35. It was found that start-up period and ignition delay have non-linearly increased with decrease in the cetane number of fuel and were increasing rapidly at cetane numbers below 45. Diesel-nock occurred strongly with decrease in the cetane number when the ignition delay had long period. Such findings were more notable under not warmed-up conditions and partial load operations. Both tests were performed to improve the combustion when using low cetane fuel, one was the intake-air heating, the another was adding ignition improver. Intake-air heating was effective if the charging efficiency was high. Cetane improver effects were different due to intake-air temperatures and operating conditions. Engine performance depends on the intake-air temperatures and operating conditions when cetane number is less than 45. Also the combustion of low cetane fuel seems to be unstable since the ignition phenomena depend on statistical factor. It should be supplied the high cetane number fuels for fishing vessels fuel at cold region
