The effect of methanol as foliar spray was examined using greenhouse-soil-grown Azolla microphylla (4018) and Azolla hybrid (UPLB sub 1). In both species, fresh weight, total chlorophyll and the acetone-insoluble protein increased in treatments with methanol. The 30 percent methanol solution was ten times more effective in increasing protein content of UPLB, compared with that of A. microphylla. The requirement for light in the metabolism of methanol was supported by the observed increased chlorophyll a/b ratio in UPLB sub 1, a likely regulation to high light intensity exposure. The observations also indicate a higher photosynthetic capacity (and higher photorespiration) in the hybrid compared with one of the immediate parents (4018)
