Site characterization and economic evaluation of existing crop sequences (farmers fields)

This study seeks to characterize the physical and socioeconomic conditions of the farmers and their cropping practices, and to identify production constraints. It involves farmers practicing any of the five major cropping sequences in Ilocos Norte [Philippines], i.e., rice-corn, rice-mungbean, rice-garlic, rice-tomato, and rice-sweet pepper. The physical, socioeconomic and production parameters of 100 randomly selected farmers were monitored and evaluated. These farmers are distributed in 10 towns of Ilocos Norte, i.e., Badoc, Pinili, Paoay, Batac, Laoag City, Bacarra, San Nicolas, Sarrat, Dingras, and Currimao. Both the yields and income from the dry season crops vary from year to year. Nevertheless, the unstable yields and unpredictable prices of produce, especially sweetpepper and garlic, are not impediments to farmers decisions in planting these crops. Tomato crop sequence have higher net income than those practicing rice-corn and rice-mungbean sequences
