Alate aphids alighting on tobacco and their relationships to some weather factors and cucumber mosaic virus incidence

The kind and number of alate aphids visiting tobacco areas were determined by using yellow pan traps from Nov 1992 to Feb 1994. A total of 2,847 alates were caught. There were composed of more than 20 species. Aphis craccivora (38 percent) was the most numerous followed by A. gossypii (18 percent) and Myzus persicae (14 percent). Using stepwise regression analysis, significant relationship was found between the number of aphids trapped during two tobacco seasons and minimum temperature. On the other hand, CMV [cucumber mosaic virus] incidence on tobacco was significantly influenced by the number of aphids trapped, windspeed, relative humidity, and average weekly maximum and minimum temperatures. Among the above factors, the number of aphids had the greatest influence. It seems that when aphid peak occurred within 28 days of planting tobacco, lower incidence of the disease was observed. In contrast, when peak of aphid arrival was extended up to 56 days of transplanting tobacco, the incidence of CMV was high
