Controlling biological deterioration of Philippine wood species by applying volatile fungicides

Laboratory and field tests were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of vapam (32.1 percent sodium n-methyldithiocarbamate), chloropicrin (trichloronitromethane) and methylisothiocyanate against decay fungi (Fomes lividus) on four Philippine wood species commonly used for poles. Results showed that survival of F. lividus in apitong (Dipterocarpus grandiflorus), tangile (Shorea polysperma), red lauan (Shorea negrosensis) and white lauan (Pentacme contorta) test blocks treated with various concentrations of fumigants varied. The fumigants caused either reduction on the survival or complete elimination of the decay fungus. The four wood species likewise exhibited varied responses to vapam methylisothiocyanate under field conditions. Results, however, indicated that th fumigants can be used in the remedial treatment of standing preservative-treated utility poles to prolong their service life
