Genetic effects for nodulation and nitrogen fixation from a diallel cross of mungbean (Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek)

A 7-parent partial diallel study of diverse mungbean genotypes was conducted to determine the magnitude of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) mean squares and effects for nodulation, nitrogen fixation and related agronomic characters. Traits evaluated were primary root nodule number, secondary root nodule number, total root nodule number, nodule score, nodule weight, total nitrogen, nitrogen uptake, percent nitrogen derived from atmosphere (percent ndfa), fixed nitrogen days to flower, plant vigor, plant height, shoot dry weight and seed yield. Both GCA and SCA mean squares were significant for most traits. Estimates of GCA were of greater magnitude than the SCA indicating that a large portion of the total genetic variance for each trait resulted from action of genes with additive genetic effects. Accessions 658 and 638 had the largest GCA effects for most of the traits studied. Large SCA effects were observed mostly in crosses EG 1240 x Acc 379, Acc 379 x Pag-asa 7 and Acc 638 x Acc 379. The implications of the different genetic estimates on the improvement of BNF potential in the population are discussed
