Effect of seed rate on grain yield and its components of small and large seeded lentils (Lens culinaris Medic)

Two lentil cultivars 9-6 (small seeded) and AARIL355 (large seeded) were grown under irrigated conditions with 20, 30 and 40 kg per hectare seed rate. The mean grain yield remained unaffected by different seed rates in 9-6 but increased significantly with increasing seed rate in AARIL355. The higher mean grain yield of 1831.5 kg per hectare with harvest index (HI) of 44.1 percent as recorded in 9-6 from 30 kg seed rate. In AAIL355 mean grain yield of 1152.2 kg per hectare with a mean HI of 45.5 percent was obtained from 40 kg per hectare seed rate. The higher grain yield in 9-6 was attributed to more plants per unit area (13.2/m row length), more plant height (37.1 cm), greater number of branches (14.9) and pods per plant (92.1) with greater number of seeds per pod (1.8) resulted in higher grain field (2.4 gm/plant). In case of AARIL355, the plant population per meter row length was lower (8 plants) with a mean plant height of 31.5 cm bearing 8.7 ranches and 36.8 pods per plant. The value for number seeds per pod (1.3) and grain weight per plant (1.1 were also smaller than those of 9-6. However, mean 1000-seed weight (41.2 gm) of AARIL355 was double than 9-6 (20.3 gm). It is thus concluded that 30 kg seed rate was found optimum for small seeded lentil, but seed rate higher than 40 kg for large seeded lentil require further trials.
