Estimation on heritable variation in four crosses of upland cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.)

Magnitude of variability, broad sense heritability and genetic advance as percent of mean were worked out to devise a suitable selection strategy for developing high yielding cotton varieties from four crosses of upland cotton viz. AUH-10 x Stoneville-731N, B557 x HG- 6-1-N, A89/FM x HG-6-1-N and HG-6-1-N x B557. The maximum values of phenotypic coefficient of variability, heritability and genetic advance as percent of mean in order were; 64.14, 70.79 and 77.80% for cotton yield; 38.92, 54.81 and 32.45% for plant height, 78.50, 62.38 and 77.00% for monopodial branches; 4Z.67, 76.89 and 47.60% for sympodial branches; 76.31, 71.00 and 90.11% for number of bolls per plant and 36.11, 78.78 and 46.67% for boll weight. Among the crosses, chances of improvement in cotton yield were greater in a cross "HG-6-1-N x B557" employing both direct and indirect selection through bolls per plant in early generation.
