Variation in the principal physicochemical parameters and eutrophy indices of epilimnion waters was evaluated during three summer stagnations in the years 1976, 1987 and 1989 in 21 lakes situated in the region of the Great Masurian Lakes. Numerical classification of 93 water samples allowed for singling out four categories of lakes. Lakes situated in a forest drainage basin displayed the lowest salinity. On the other hand, the pollution, run-off from agricultural areas and water retention were decisive of the salinity degree and eutrophication of the other lakes. Total phosphorus content in the water fluctuated in the major part of lakes between 0.020-0.087 mg/l, whereas in the lakes with great salinity and pollution it even reached 0.228 mg/l
