Spring barley tolerance to continuous cropping

Spring barley was grown continuously and in a seven-course crop rotation after potatoes. In the experiment nineteen fertilization variants were used. The highest yields of spring barley grown continuously were obtained if minerals with organic fertilization only was applied. Mineral fertilization applied alone was more effective than farmyard manure. An estimation of spring barley infection by soil-born diseases in the years 1993-94 showed domination of brown foot rot (Fusarium sp.) and eyespot (Pseudocercosporella herpotrichoides). The mean infection index for spring barley was similar both in monoculture and crop rotation. The soil population of cereal cyst nematode (Heterodera avenae Woll.) was lower for crop rotation than for continuous barley
