The importance of cassava as a crop is emphasized. It is a major carbohydrate food for five million people and in tropical Africa is the single most important source of calories in the diet. Total world production has more than doubled since 1960, to an estimated 150 million tonnes in 1990. The present status and prospects for cassava are discussed and the socio-economic, political and institutional environment within which cassava research and development activities will be carried out are described. In conclusion it is acknowledged that the goal is improving the welfare of those that depend on cassava for their livelihood.
