Annual dynamics of organic matter and basic nutrients in sediments of 2 hydromelioration channels in the Vychodoslovenska Nizina Lowlands, Slovakia

Sediments from 4 sites of 2 hydromelioration channels in the Vychodoslovenska Nizina Lowlands, Slovakia were monitored. Results showed differences in both the amount and qualitative structure of their organic matter content. High organic matter concentrations with an increased share of resistant matter due to imperfect degradation contributed to increased humus production. During mineralization of the most unstable fraction of organic matter the concentration of ammonium nitrogen predominated over that of nitrate-nitrogen, thus indicating a higher rate of denitrification compared to nitrification. Changes in the amount of phosphoric compounds were more dependent on the release rate of organic and inorganic fractions from organic matter than on their content. The Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and K+ cations dynamics are related to the organic matter mineralization, and to their utilization by macro-vegetation during its growth.
