Effects of threshing methods and storage containers on fungus flora in stored wheat

Changes in fungus flora present in stored wheat (INIA 66) subjected to 6 different threshing methods were observed over a 6-month period, with samples being tested each month. In the first 2 months, both genera and quantity of seed-borne fungi showed little change, for all threshing methods. But after 3 months, the quantity of seed-borne fungi began to decrease rapidly by amounts that varied according to threshing method-with 720 rpm machine-threshed wheat having the greatest decrease, followed by 1,050 rpm machine-threshed wheat. At the same time, damage to the wheat caused by storage fungi increased after 3 months and varied according to threshing method with 620 rpm machine-threshed wheat being the least damaged, followed by hand-threshed wheat. Changes in fungus flora present in stored wheat (INIA 66) stored in 7 different types of storage container-jar, tin can, woven-polypropylene bag, jute sack, cotton bag, polyethylene bag (2 laryers), and polypropylene bag (2 layers)-were observed over a 6-month period, with samples being tested each month. In the first 2 months, the quantity of seed-borne fungi showed little change, in all containers. But after 3 months, the quantity of seed-borne fungi decreased rapidly in such containers as the cotton bag, jute sack and woven-polypropylene bag. At the same time, damage to the wheat caused by storage fungi increased rapidly and was greatest in the cotton bag, jute sack, and woven-polypropylene bag respectively. The other containers gave similar results of decreased seed-borne fungi and increased storage fungi. In this study, the most commonly observed seed-borne fungi were Dreshslera sorokiniana and Fusarium spp. respectively. The most commonly observed storage fungi were Aspergillus glaucus and Aspergillus flavus, respectively.
