Contribution of leaves at different strata on seed yield and seed quality of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.)

Experiment on contribution of leaves at different strata on seed yield and seed quality of sunflower. S 101 had greater seed yield, seed number per head and head diameter but 1000 seed weight and seed weight per head were lower than Hysun 33. However, times of defoliation had no significant effect on seed yield and seed quality of sunflower. Removal of middle leaves significantly reduced seed yield and yield components such as 1000 seed weight and seed weight per head, as well as dry weight accumulation in seed, seed growth rate and head diameter (at R9). Similar effects were true for the aforementioned characters when top and bottom leaves were removed but with a lesser extent. The seed oil content and protein content of Hysun 33 were comparable to S 101. The implications are that the middle leaves are of prime importance. They should be taken care of properly especially after V12 to V14 stages when they are developing.
