Economic analysis of glutinous rice production in wet season in saline soils in Changwat Maha-Sarakham, 1989-90 crop year

Objective of this study is to estimate production function of glutinous rice production in the wet season in saline soil in order to find the returns to scale and technical efficiency as well as economic efficiency of inputs use. In addition, costs and returns of different rice varieties both salt tolerant and non-salt tolerant varieties are also calculated. The result of the production function analysis shows that labor, amount of nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients, animal manure and rice varieties are important variables significantly determining rice yield. The returns to scale of the production function reveals decreasing returns to scale. The comparison of technical efficiency use of inputs between the farmers who used salt tolerant and non-salt tolerant varieties shows that all inputs use in salt tolerant varieties are more efficient. The cost and returns analysis also shows that net returns over cash cost of salt tolerant and non-salt tolerant varieties are 726.86 and 588.00 Baht per rai respectively. In conclusion, to increase rice yield in saline soil for sufficient consumption and higher farm income, government should also pay more attention to soil improvement especially in the area with high salinity.
