Factors influencing the adoption of improved rice varieties by farmers in Changwat Chiang Mai

Most important problems in Thai agricultural sector was low productivities especially, in rice production. This problem was to increase the productivities by using some new modern techniques in production; using high quality seed, chemical fertilizer, pesticide and agricultural machinery. The rice varieties were the most important things for productivities increase because improved rice varieties had their own characteristics to give higher average yields. Cost and return analysis; the farmers growing improved rice varieties had total cash cost of 616.61 baht per rai, the variable cash cost of 422.17 baht per rai and fixed cash cost of 194.44 baht per rai. The total imcome generated by rice production was 1,792.70 baht per rai, leaving the net profit of 1,176.09 baht par rai or 5,739.32 baht per household. The farmers growing local rice varieties had total cash cost of 502.92 baht per rai. Total income of rice production was 1,367.59 baht per rai resulting in the net profit of 864.67 baht per rai or 3,726.73 baht per household. The important factors which influenced the adoption of improved rice varieties by the farmers were recommendation and knowledge obtained from the agricultural extension officers. These knowledge and recommendation helped increase the probability in accepting improved rice varieties by the farmers. Another factors could also increase the probability in accepting improved rice varieties by farmers were experiences in growing rice, level of education, size of growing rice area, membership of farmer's group and rice yield per rai.
