The transfer of cocoa germplasm from one country to another involves the risk of introducing diseases and pests to the recipient nation. Enumerates instances where quarantine safeguards failed in the past. Outlines the drawbacks of existing procedures for the detection of cocoa viruses. Methods similar to those for the detection of low titre virus and viroid in citrus are recommended for screening cocoa in intermediate quarantine facilities. The best risk-free method for the movement of cocoa germplasm is through seed transfer. Strict adherence to the recommended quarantine procedures at the donor and recipient countries and at intermediate quarantine facilities will eliminate the potential risk of inadvertent introductions of pathogens and pests.
