The study concerned microbiological activity in soil under corn grown after sugar beet and corn. The number and enzymic activity of microorganisms depended on the preceding crop, soil compaction, and depth and date of sampling. The number and enzymic activity of useful microorganisms decreased, while the number of detrimental microorganisms increased in soil where sugar beet was the preceding crop. The number of all studied microorganisms groups and activity of the enzymes dehydrogenase, protease, and urease were lower in compact than in loose soil. On the average, the number and enzymic activity of microorganisms decreased with increasing soil depth, being highest at the first and lowest at the last sampling date.
