The quality of surface waters: rivers, canals and lakes in Vojvodina Province (Yugoslavia), during five years from 1987 to 1991, is reviewed. Heavy metals are hazard pollutants of the environment, because of their high toxicity, and they produced long-term effects on the environment and natural resources. Extreme concentrations of lead and mercury (border entrance) for period 1987/91, are presented too. Finally, new intentions of surface water quality protection are also treated.
