Effects of acute x-ray irradiation on antioxidative defence in the rats chronically exposed to cold

The effect of acute whole body X-irradiation (6.7Gy) on the antioxidative defence was studied in 2 groups of rats: one group was previously exposed to cold (4 deg C) for 35 days and control group was kept at 22 deg C (+- 2 deg C). Catalase, glutathione-peroxidase, glutathione-reductase and glutathione-S-transferase activities, as well as ascorbic acid and vitamin E content in blood, liver, brain, interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) and small intestine were measured. Characteristic changes in the activity and amount of antioxidative defence components induced by specific physiological stimulus (cold) appear to provide a better protection of a target tissue (IBAT) against X-irradiation. Increase in the brain glutathione-reductase activity after irradiation of cold-exposed animals could be the main event leading to previously observed better survival of cold-adapted animals after irradiation in comparison with the controls.
