In this paper were investigated the number and enzymic activity of microorganisms in soil under wheat grown after sugar beet and alfalfa. The number and enzymic activity of microorganisms depended on the previous crop, soil compaction, the depth of sampling and period of sampling. The number and enzymic activity of valuable microorganisms decreased while the number of non-valuable microorganisms increased in the soil sampled from the field where sugar beet was previous crop. The number and enzymic activity in compact soil decreased more than in loose soil. On average, the number and enzymic activity decreased in soil sampled from deeper layers, it was lowest in the first and highest in the last sampling period.
