Engineering technologies for women [in Bangladesh]

Rural women in Bangladesh play a vital role in agricultural production processes specially in post-harvest processing as well as household work. About 85% of the rice post-harvest activities in the rural areas are accomplished by women. These activities mainly are threshing, drying, parboiling, milling and separating husk, bran and broken rice from dehusked paddy. It was observed that female workers can comfortably operate small postharvest equipment like pedal thresher, winnower, micro rice huller, etc. More than 50% of the workers in rice mills are women, but they are getting less wage than their male counterparts. They are capable of doing all the activities in the rice mill like men if they are allowed to do so and should earn equal share of wages. It is recommended that a programme should be undertaken for faster adoption of the appropriate pre and postharvest technologies for female workers in order to reduce their drudgery and to increase efficiency. It is also recommended to arrange training and women's rally for operation and maintenance of these machines/technologies.
