BNYVV and fungal root rot on young sugar beet plants [in China]

In a variety trial in China on irrigated and BNYVV-contaminated fields all sugar beet lines, except BNYVV-tolerant ones, were wiped out due to extreme root rot. This observation indicated the possibility that BNYVV-tolerant sugar beet varieties might be less prone to root rot, even under high inoculum pressure. This hypothesis was tested with two susceptible cv (Accord, Hilma) and two tolerant cv (Gabriela, Roxane). Rhizoctonia solani as well as Pythium and Fusarium species, which had previously been isolated from a field with heavy root in Hesse, served as fungal pathogens. The preliminary results seem to indicate that varietal differences are more important than the degree of tolerance to BNYVV. The investigations will be continued.
