Aphanomyces root rot in sugar beet: improvement of the tolerance level by conventional breeding

Seventy high yielding hybrids have been screened for root and seedling tolerance to Aphanomyces. The evaluation of the seedling tolerance (STI value) for each hybrid led to the identification of one pollinator line expressing a significant degree of tolerance. Hybrids based on this pollinator rank very high for the STI value. Analysis of the root tolerance index (RTI value) showed two main groups of hybrids with a different degree of tolerance. Hybrids with a stronger tolerance than the variety Comete could be selected. Comparisons between the RTI and STI values for each hybrid suggest that root and seedling tolerance level are essentially independent.
